Scotland - A Concise History
Our thanks to the author, James
Halliday, for letting us publish his excellent concise history of
Scotland.
A journey to the Islands of Scotland A book by Samuel Johnson of his travels in 1773 from
Edinburgh to the Highlands and then over to the Western Isles and down to
Glasgow. This was at the time of the Highland clearances and is an
excellent read.
General
History of the Highlands This account comes from a six volume set "History of the Scottish
Highlands, Highland Clans and Highland Regiments" published in 1887. You
should also see our section on Scottish
Regiments which is part of this set.
The Story of Leith A book by John Russell c1922 about the town of Leith near Edinburgh.
A Summer in Skye A great book done in the 1800's in which you'll read about the place and
the people and all about Second Site and Fairy Bridges and much else
besides.
Rothiemurchus Of all the districts overshadowed by the extensive Cairngorm range the
most magnificent, by universal consent, is Rothiemurchus. It is a region
entirely unique. There is nothing like it elsewhere.
The Story of Ferniehirst Castle The stronghold of the Kerr family and includes accounts about the families
Kerr, Home, Elliot, Maxwell, Rutherford, Scott, Swinton and Turnbull.
Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Scotsmen
Originally edited by Robert Chambers and then the new edition along
with the supplemental volume says by the Rev. Thos. Thomson. It was
published by Blackie and Son of Glasgow, Edinburgh, and London in
1856.
Byways of the
Scottish Borders In the Autumn of 1886 the author walked with an
artist friend through some of the most famous of the Border country,
from Moffat eastwards.
Historical Geography of the Clans of
Scotland This book includes a detailed map of the Clans of Scotland together with

Memoirs of a Highland Lady
The Autobiography of Elizabeth Grant of Rothiemurchus afterwards Mrs
Smith of Baltiboys 1797-1830. The Highland lady was a clanswoman
of the Rothiemurchus Grants, and is therefore of special interest to
American readers, since it was from that same branch of the ancient
Scottish family that Gen. Ulysses S. Grant claimed descent.

Women in History We seem to hear lots about famous men so we felt it
only right to highlight some very special women.
Significant Scots A lot of the entries in here come from the book "Biographical
Dictionary of Eminent Scotsmen" and include some very detailed entries
that are an excellent read.
Articles on Scottish History A collection of articles on Scottish historical themes from the
proceedings of the Society of Antiquarians of Scotland. Examples are
"Scottish Charms and Amulets" and "A tour through the Western Isles in
1768", etc.
Orkney and Shetland This is the account of Shetland from this book by T Mainland
published in 1920.

Second Shetland Truck System Report by Guthrie, William, 1835-1908 This file is 3.8Mb so you'll understand how large it is. It does give
